Intent, Implementation & Impact Statement - Art
Intent
At Kings Norton Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. We believe that our ambitious Art and Design curriculum engages, inspires and challenges pupils.
Our Art and Design curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop and extend their skills, whilst inspiring creativity and thinking innovatively.
We believe all children should be provided with the opportunities to reach their full potential and strive to equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We provide a supportive, inclusive environment through which every child is enabled to develop an appreciation of art and design and express their opinions and responses.
Implementation
Our Art and Design curriculum presents children with opportunities to develop and enhance their skills in using a range of media and materials, including drawing, painting, collage and 3D artwork.
Throughout a pupil’s art journey through Kings Norton Primary School, they will have had the opportunity to study 17 artists, each carefully selected to compliment our curriculum whilst exposing them to a range of cultures, backgrounds and art forms.
Children produce meaningful works of art, as a means of expression or to explore the styles and techniques of artists that inspire our own creativity. Throughout the process children are encouraged to experiment and develop their designs, continually evaluating and reflecting on their work.
Impact
Our Art curriculum aims to inspire and expose our learners to a range of art forms, acquisition of artist skills and encourages them to begin to develop and express their own opinions of art and design.
Pupil’s written reflections and verbal discussions about their learning; which echoes their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work.
From Year 1, pupils use a sketchbook to capture their learning journey in Art. These follow pupils up through school demonstrating progress.
All staff reflect on how well our Art and Design learning journey is being followed, in alignment with the progression of skills.
Children in Foundation Stage are assessed within Expressive Arts and Design. Age related expectation levels are reported to parents at the end of the reception year.
