Pupil Premium
Pupil Premium Policy
Background
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.
The Pupil Premium is allocated to children from families who are currently known to be eligible for FSM in both mainstream and non-mainstream settings and children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months.
The Government decided that eligibility for the Pupil Premium in 2013-14 was to be extended to pupils who have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last 6 years. As a group, children who have been eligible for FSM at any point in time have consistently lower educational attainment than those who have never been eligible for FSM. A premium was also introduced for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces.
School Vision
At Kings Norton Primary School we believe that every child can and should achieve and reach the highest possible outcomes. We aim to ensure that all of our unique young people have a happy and successful time in our school and we are committed to working in partnership with parents and other appropriate agencies in order to achieve this.
Our Mission Statement clearly supports this:
Each child who attends Kings Norton Primary School is a unique person; she or he has skills to be developed, curiosity to be encouraged, challenges to meet and potential to be achieved. We have the highest expectations of each child
The targeted and strategic use of pupil premium will support us in achieving our vision.
Principles
We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of the pupils;
We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed;
In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged;
We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged.
Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority individuals. Limited funding and resources mean that not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at any one given moment in time.
Provision
The range of provision the school may consider making for this group could include:
Providing small group work with an experienced teacher focused on overcoming gaps in learning;
One to One support;
Additional teaching staff resource and learning opportunities provided through external agencies;
Additional resources made available for the use of children at home or in school;
All our work through the Pupil Premium is aimed at accelerating progress, moving children to at least age related expectations;
Pupil premium resources may also be used to target children on FSM to develop the social aspects of learning, including confidence building, friendship issues, etc;
Allocation of an appointed member of staff to monitor attendance and undertake first day contact in order to raise attendance rates for Pupil Premium children.
Opportunities for children to access social and cultural experiences that they may otherwise miss.
