French
Intent
As stated in the National Curriculum 2014, our curriculum aims to ‘foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.’
Our curriculum provision is aligned to the National Curriculum which aims to ensure that all pupils:
understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
Implementation
At Kings Norton Primary School, French lessons are delivered weekly from Year 3 for 30minutes a week. Language Angels is used as a framework for provision and assessment and some of the units that are covered are listed below:
I am learning French
Animals
Instruments
Fruits
Vegetables
My Family
The Date
My Home
Do you have a pet?
Lessons consist of oral rehearsal, written recording, reading, songs and games using the Language Angels resources and unit maps.
Impact
As well as achieving the subject content aims stated in the National Curriculum we want our pupils to leave Kings Norton Primary School with a love of languages and thirst for continuing their academic journey with them.
To ensure that all learners are making good progress and achieving age related outcomes in French, evidence is collected weekly which informs teacher assessment and lessons are adapted as necessary. End of unit oral and written assessments take place and data is used to monitor whole school attainment for Languages.
